Microsoft Access Relational Combo Box

Using a Combo Box to Select a Customer from Another Table

Q: I have a form that tracks service calls for my customers. How can I pick the customer from a list instead of having to type in the customer ID each time I make a new service call entry?

A: For this, you would use a Combo Box or List Box that is based on your Customer table and bound to the CustomerID field in your service call table (form). This will allow you to pick a customer from your customer table and store that ID in your service call form.

Here's a screen shot from one of my tutorials:

Fortunately, there is a Combo Box Wizard that will walk you through most of the process, however this is much easier to SHOW you than to explain here, so watch the following free mini tutorial for step-by-step instructions. This topic is fundamental to building good relational databases in Access, so I spend a lot of time in my full classes to it.

Here is a FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that will walk you through this topic in detail:

I teach the concepts in this free mini tutorial in my Access 201 course. These are full courses - over 60 minutes in length each. I spend a lot more time going over how to do this, in addition to lots more tips and tricks.
