Server Maintenance

UPDATE 6/1/12 5:00pm EDT: The first round of maintenance is completed. Backups are done. Server has been physically cleaned. I may need to take it down once more today, but just quickly. If you find yourself unable to log on, just wait a few minutes and try again.

Hey folks. The User Database Server will be going down sometime within the next 24 hours, but just for an hour or two. This is not the main web site, but the server that holds all of your user accounts. This means that you won't be able to log on to your account while the database server is down HOWEVER existing customers should still be able to watch any videos that are already on their accounts.

Basically, we use 3 different servers here to share the traffic load. There is the main web server ( that holds our web site pages. Then we have the user database server ( that has all of your account information. Finally, we have the video server ( that streams all of the video. All 3 of these servers have to be up and running for you to watch your lessons.

However, every time you log on to your account, a copy of your user information is CACHED on the web server. This is a "backup copy" in case the web server can't talk to the database server. When you first hit the web server, you see "logging you on, Richard..." (well, with your name, not mine). That's when the web server is talking to the database server. If it can't make a connection, it reverts to your last known account information and course listing.

So... don't panic. You'll be able to still watch all of your videos that were on your account as of the last time you logged on. Any NEW purchases, however, won't show up until the database server comes back online. And, no, this won't affect the order system, so if you need to pick up some new courses go right ahead. That information is stored on one of our secure servers in a database until the main database can retrieve it. You just won't have access to your new lessons until it comes back online.

What am I doing? Just some routine maintenance on the server box. One of the cooling fans in it is making that "I'm about to die" noise and I can tell it's about time. So I need to shut it down, pull it out, clean it (blow all the dust out - which you should do every couple of months and I haven't done in about a year), and replace that fan before it dies completely. Normal stuff.

Thank you for being so informative,

Reply from Richard Rost:

I try. Also, don't forget that if our MAIN web site is down you can always check our Facebook Page or Twitter Feed for news. If you ever try hitting and it's down, I'll post WHY on those sites. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. A few years ago a dump truck hit a telephone pole near the office where our main web server is housed. It completely took out Internet service for the whole block for most of a day. Read More...
