Dataverse Upload Images   Link   Email
Andrew Fordred
Hello All

Been playing around with Dataverse and Access, really impressed.

Is Dataverse not an option as a backend for Access for placing data onto the web?

It definitely lowers the administration and learning curve in comaparison with say SQL Server.

Anyone else tried or have experience with this option?

Thanks
Andy

I haven't looked at all into dataverse so I can't comment on how that works.

But here might be some more ideas for you to look into if you haven't seen them. Access Online

Also, SQL server isn't that steep of a learning curve, with the SQL Seminar you could be online in a few hours, and with the most basic understanding of SQL (which you probably know from Access anyways) you can perform actions in it. The more advanced stuff, I would think would be more difficult regardless of what hosting service you used (even if you had a GUI interface).

I've played around with Dataverse a bit myself. Honestly, I think if your goal is to work with data ONLINE, then SQL Server on WinHost is actually easier to use. But... I still haven't taken a ton of time to play with it. Jury is still out.

Thanks for your feedback much appreciated.

The biggest reason for considering this route, is the use of Access data with PowerBI, as it is easy to link to powerApps etc.

But, yes it can also link to SQL server.  For development purposes this does allow for options.

I have been Tinkering as well with Data Verse, and for the same reason PowerApps allows low code development for Mobile devices and shares the data between desktop Access and PowerApps. I am still trying to fix my mess with Access to push the data over to Data verse, undoing years of poor choices is so difficult, glad I found this resource.

I just remember that I viewed this previously, not sure if the OP would want to take a dive into this:

Migrate Access data to Dataverse

thanks, yes I have seen that link and various others, also watched some of the Access groups' videos, as Richard says; the jury is still out, there is quite a lot of discussion about it.  We have tried as we want t connect our Access to PowerBI - Dataverse does have some limitations and appears to break with data size of particular types. This may change in time, but at the moment it may be best to stay with SQL.

Dataverse is best for people who need a wide range of data sources (public, private, cloud-based, etc.), whereas an online SQL Server database contains mainly private data.  That's the main difference I see, although I've used PowerApps and the likes only slightly.

For SQL Server to use outside data sources, the user has to import them; if outside parties update their data, you have to re-import them.  But with PowerApps, you "link" to these data sources as if they were private, and changes to those data are automatically reflected at your end.  This is very useful if the data you link to are constantly changing, such as stock quotes, retail prices, IMDb titles, cast and crew, etc.

Any businesses that rely heavily on outside data (which many do, in this age of Internet connectivity) will find this useful.  20 years ago I already had a situation that could use this.  My company's shipping system needed to add UPS "fuel surcharge" to shipping fees.  But UPS changed fuel surcharge every week due to fuel price fluctuations.  We had to check daily on UPS website to see if the surcharge was changed, then manually changed it in our system.  If we had been able to directly "link" to the UPS website and get the data, it would've saved us a lot of trouble.
