Access Q&A: Default Font, IDs, Footers
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on Twitter Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost   13 years ago

Q: I've taken Access 101 thru 205. Please explain how to change the font default for forms in the design view. Also, shouldn't the CustomerID and the ContactID self populate in the child table? Do I need to keep adding this information manually? And finally, How do I get a total for just the items listed on a subform.  >Margaret

A: There really isn't any way to change the default font for new form fields (text boxes) or labels. What I personally do is create one form the way I like it - and then just copy and paste that to create new forms.

You can actually create a blank form called NORMAL (save it with that exact name) and then save that in your database. Any formatting changes you make to that form will then be applied to new forms - but only form properties themselves (colors, etc.). It doesn't change the properties for objects in that form. I haven't actually covered this yet - so I'll make a note to mention it in an upcoming class (or Tips & Tricks item).

Assuming you have a Customer Form with a Contacts Subform, the CustomerID should self-populate if you have your Link Master and Link Child properties correctly set in the subform. The ContactID is an AutoNumber, so it will get it's value automatically. This is in Access 202, lesson 5. Examine the properties for the subform.

To total the items in your subform, turn the FORM FOOTER on in the subform and place a textbox there with the =SUM(FieldName) control source. This is covered in Access 220. http://www.599cd.com?GOAC220

Hope this helps.
