New Access Tips
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on Twitter Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost   14 years ago

I've added two new Access tips

The first will show you how to calculate the number of months someone has been alive using the DateDiff and DateAdd functions, something I haven't covered yet in my classes.

The second is something I get asked all the time... how to create your own value that automatically increments, but isn't an AutoNumber field.

Frank, very true. You would have to calculate the counter when the record is first edited and then IMMEDIATELY save it to the table. The chances of a data collision would then be very small. You could perform ANOTHER check when you then go to save the final record to the table, and update if necessary. That would make it REALLY rare for any collisions.

Hi Richard.  I just read your Access tip on "Incrementing your own counter". It is a good tip for a single user database.  How would you implement this in a multi-user database? The DMAX statement could return the same value to multiple users.
