Viewing Your Stock Portfolio Data in Access

 S  M  L  XL  FS  Join Now

In this video, I'm going to teach you how to take your stock portfolio data from Excel and view it in Microsoft Access by linking to the workbook file, cleaning up the unnecessary data, and adding calculations where needed.

Spencer from Las Vegas, Nevada (a Platinum Member) asks: I watched your Stock Portfolio for Excel video last night. Very informative and helpful. Thank you. Is there any way I can pull that data into Access? I know how to import Excel files into Access but the names of the stock are missing and I get a ton of blank lines and garbage where the calculations are. Help?

Members

Members will see how to make a nice pretty interface in Access, including conditional formatting, just like we had in Excel. I will also show you how to use VBA to refresh the data in the Excel sheet and get update stock prices on demand without having to open the sheet. We will then use a timer event to refresh the data automatically at whatever interval you choose. We'll also make a button to open the Excel sheet in case you want to make changes (you buy or sell stock, etc.) And by popular demand we'll do something cool with TempVars that everyone keeps asking me about.

Richard,
Stock Portfolio Tech Help Extended Cut.
I have built the MS Access database according to your instructions in the video.
The UpdateStockPricing works fine from the Updater Form but gives me a "sub not found" error when I call it from the Refresh Stock Data button on the Stock Portfolio form. Read More...

Does the template download work for you?

Alex,
Running from the Stock Portfolio button on the Main Menu on Richard's template throws an error saying that the C;\users\Richard\desktop path is invalid.
I've changed that path in the two locations that I can find but am still getting that path error!!
I've searched for "richard" using the search project option in the vba code and cannot see any other occurrence!

Richard, you raised the bar again thank you.  Love the way you show things and make it easy to follow.  I work with many folks and they always use Excel, and call it a database (LOL).  What you just showed will make my job a much easier.   In the past I had imported the excel and done a lot of work renaming fields to later do and Update query.  I also use the file picker that you showed us in the Genealogy seminar.  The folks I work with cant keep stuff in one place so I have to go hunt for it and if I did a search I iwll find 50 sheets. The setting up the query and updating the Sheet.  SOLID GOLD.  Now I have to ask How hard is it to work with excel with several sheets?  Can you add that to your never-ending list of things to do?  This tech help session is real life scenario and will be used often.   Read More...

It's a bit of a pain... but yeah, I'll add it to the list. :)

What exactly do you want to do with these multiple sheets? Link to them? Because if you set up the linked table, you can specify easily which sheet you want. The only pain is if you have to work with them via Automation like I showed.
