Richard -
Can you set up and use SQL Server Express using this?
I really don't have a specific use in mind for this Seminar per se from the stand point of having an application open to the world.

In my instance, at most I would have the Corp. office and one Club office, it wouldn't be visible to the world.

Maybe host it on my server and open a port to that application for the satellite office?

My other thought was it would be a way to develop and learn with out spending the money on hosting just to "play".

Thoughts?

You can install Express on a server in your network and connect to it via Access or ASP (local web server), just have the connection string point to that one.
I have it setup locally on my laptop for dev, then it's easier enough to transfer any data or files over to your QA/PROD environment when you know it's working.
Richard Rost
Yes, as Alex pointed out you can certainly use a local SQL Server Express to do this. In fact, one of the things on my TO DO list is to make some SQL Server lessons. However, I would only do that if all of your clients are on the same LAN. Once you start dealing with a 2nd location, you might as well get a hosted solution. The cost is PEANUTS. You don't open your IN-HOUSE SERVER up to hackers by opening a port. You can now hit your data from anywhere - any office, on the road, etc. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the feed back.  I was mainly thinking of Local LAN for dev and testing so that answered my questions. (for now)

Howdy, I did set up server express long time ago... If I had to redo it I may not even know where to start.  Any how Access works great with this in mind that l was trying to set up a local webpage on my computer to link to the server.  No internet access, kind of a sandbox set up.  my goal was to practice building a web page with links to the server and view results in access.  So is it possible to set up a webpage with out a host to access the database?
Richard Rost
Sure. Install IIS.

BOOM I know what I'm gonna try this weekend.
Thanks Richard

-- Well, not if you set up a VPN within a reasonably decent router :-)
Richard Rost
Yeah, I'm very careful about opening up ports to my office network too.
