Putting Access Databases Online
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost   6 years ago

Now that Microsoft has dropped support for Access Web Databases, I've been getting LOTS of emails from people asking what the best way to share their Access data online is.

If you want to share data online using the Access database that you've built, the BEST way to do it is to upload the TABLES to an online SQL Server. You can get incredibly cheap hosting for this from most major ISPs (including the one we use, GoDaddy), and it's a relatively easy and secure way to share your data. You just have to upload the tables, link them to your Access front-end, and distribute that front-end file to whomever needs to use it. Plus, you can still develop additional solutions in another language like ASP to connect directly to the data from a web page, for example. I cover how to upload your Access tables to an online SQL Server database in Access Expert Level 24, Lesson 4.

Now, this isn't the best solution if you have a HUGE database. If you're talking about hundreds-of-thousands of records, then you might find this solution too slow. But, if you have a reasonably sized database, then this is a simple, inexpensive solution that may work well for most small and mid-sized businesses.
