When designing forms is it possible to apply formatting to text fields so they will be formatted automatically for items such as phone numbers, in other words so that the area code will be displayed in parentheses and a dash will be there between the exchange and the last 4 numbers? It seems that the only options available are for time formats and currency.

Sure. You can use the FORMAT or INPUT MASK properties to set this up quite easily in your table so that all of the forms or reports you base on that data inherit it. I cover this in Access Beginner 3.
