Show ZIP Codes by State Upload Images   Link   Email
Roger Reece
Is there a way to select a specific combo box on a form based upon the data entered in another field on the same form?  An example would be a set of zip codes that would show based upon the state that was selected previously in the form.  Each state would have list of zip codes that are only pertinent to that state.

Yep, or you could use the ZIP Code Template technique in reverse - have a list of states and their available ZIP codes.

In fact, that would make a cool lesson... if you didn't want to download a complete list of ZIP codes and store that in your database, you could make a self-learning ZIP code table. You type in (or select) the state, and a combo box appears with a list of available ZIP codes that are already in the system, with an option to add a NEW one. If you're a business that serves a small geographic location, you would eventually get all of the ZIP codes in your area in the list. Plus the Post Office occasionally updates or adds new ZIP codes, and this would make your database learn. Anyone interested in seeing this in a lesson?

Thank you for both solutions.  For my application, I think I am going with the cascading combo boxes.  The example I gave may have not been the best one to use since you already had a solution just for zip codes and my application isn't for zipcodes.  In my database, I have one combo box that I would like to drive the selections available in another combo box.  Sounds like the cascading boxes as outlined in your Access 307 video you mention will do the trick.  Thanks.

Roger: Access Developer 6 has more up-to-date lessons than Access 307. I'd recommend that unless you're using Access 2003 and older.

Alex: Nice call. :)
